Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Lion Safari in the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat on 3rd March He took pictures of Asian lions and spread the word about the importance of conservation. What did you see? Why is this important?
Depicting lions of the Gir: Glimpses of Modi’s safari
Dressed in a safari costume, Modi painted lions like photographers. X (Twitter) wrote: "On World Wildlife Day this morning, I went on a safari in Gire, where Asian lions live. Why is Gir unique?
The Gir Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 1,412 sq km in Junagadh district. This is the only natural habitat for Asian lions. According to the 2020 census, there are 674 lions here. Mr. Modi was pictured with lions in the green dry forests, along with tigers, deer and even 300 species of birds (not peacocks).
From Chief Minister to Prime Minister: Modi’s patronage legacy
Mr. Modi is not just a tourist, but he remembered his own memories. "Giragaman reminds us of when we started conservation work as Gujarat Chief Minister," he wrote in X. The Singh project (₹2,927 crore) launched in 2020 has been a success. He lauded the efforts of tribal communities and local women. A new lion census will take place in May 2025.
Beyond the Lions: A Vision of the Vantara Project
After the safari, Mr. Modi visited the Vantara Project (located near the Railways Jamnagar Refinery). That project protects and treats captive animals (such as elephants). On March 2, after praying at the Somnath temple, he went to Vantara.
