Outlook outage frustrates users with 'Service Unavailable' errors worldwide

  • Access related problems: User reports that despite the active membership, the mailboxes are locked or "invalid license" error.
  • Performance Problems: Unable to download / receive slow email delivery, inability to send / receive messages, or attachments.
  • Extensive effect: Related Microsoft 365 Services, such as Exchange Online and Microsoft Teams Calendar, are also affected.

This interruption is global, and its reports are increasing rapidly in cities like New York, London, Chicago and Manchester. Over 300 complaints per minute have been logged on DownDetector, which reflects the severity of interruption.

Why Is This Happening?

Microsoft has confirmed this interruption, but has not told any obvious reason. The Office Service is written on the health portal, "We are working on this," and teams are reviewing network telemetry. Instead of speculation about X, a technical disturbance, possibly pointing to a failed update. It matches previous blockages, such as a defective code update in March 2025. There is no evidence of claims of malicious activity.

How It’s Affecting Users

  • Professional Interruption: The companies dependent on Outlook for email and scheduling have to face the delay in meetings and interruption in the workflow.
  • The desperation of the user: X post highlight the disturbing situation, in which the user is unable to start their workdays or manage important tasks.
  • Intermittent problems: Some users report partial functionality, such as delay in email, while others live completely offline.

Microsoft’s Response

Microsoft's 365 Status Account has confirmed the problem on x and issuing its solution, but no time limit is completely recovered until 04:36 PM IST. The previous solutions to deal with the outage of May 2025 are as follows:

  • Reaching Microsoft 365 via https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365.
  • Full Browser Refresh (CTRL + F5) is being attempted.

No new solution has been shared for this outage.

What Can You Do?

  • Monitor Update: Follow Microsoft's 365 position on X (@ MSFT365Status) or check the Administrator Center (Reference MO1068615).
  • Use options: Use other communication devices such as third-party email clients or phones or messaging apps.
  • Be safe: Avoid scam links claiming to fix the outage that has been warned by X users.
  • Backup data: System backups for Microsoft Office 365 can protect important email during device interruption.

Why It Matters

This interruption follows a pattern of Microsoft 365 interruptions, including the events of March 2025 (flawed code updates) and November 2024 (36 hours interruption). Repeated problems arise concerns about the reliability of Microsoft's infrastructure, which falls on businesses and individuals dependent on Outlook. Lack of transparency on the reasons increases the disappointment of users.
