‘General Hospital’ Star Tristan Rogers Dies at 79

Los Angeles, August 16, 2025 — Veteran actor Tristan Rogers, best known to television audiences for his iconic role as Robert Scorpio on the hit soap opera General Hospital, has died at the age of 79. His passing on August 15 follows a brief battle with lung cancer, his manager confirmed.

From Melbourne to Hollywood Fame

Born in Melbourne, Australia, on June 3, 1946, Rogers launched his career in Australian television with roles in shows like Bellbird, Number 96, and The Box. He later appeared in British films such as Four Dimensions of Greta and The Flesh and Blood Show before making his way to Hollywood in the late 1970s.

His big break came in 1980, when he was cast as Robert Scorpio on General Hospital. What was meant to be a short-term role quickly expanded into one of daytime TV’s most beloved characters. Rogers became central to the soap’s most memorable moments, including the legendary Luke and Laura wedding storyline in 1981, which drew over 30 million viewers.

Over the next four decades, Rogers appeared in more than 1,400 episodes of the series, while also reprising his role in General Hospital: Night Shift. He later made appearances in other soaps such as The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, as well as primetime shows including Babylon 5. Fans of Disney also recognized his voice as Jake the kangaroo in The Rescuers Down Under.


His Final Battle

In July 2025, Rogers revealed that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer, asking fans for privacy as he underwent treatment. Just hours after sharing the news, he made what would become one of his final on-screen appearances, returning briefly to General Hospital in a touching family scene.

Despite his illness, Rogers’ enduring charm and commitment to his craft left an impression on colleagues and fans alike.

Following news of his passing, General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini issued a heartfelt statement:
