James Gunn reveals 'Man of Tomorrow' featuring Superman and Lex Luthor's mech suit, based on new art by DC legend Jim Lee. |
James Gunn is keeping the momentum going in his DC Universe. The filmmaker revealed on Wednesday that his next entry in the Superman Saga will be titled Man of Tomorrow, hitting theaters on July 9, 2027. The announcement came via Instagram, where Gunn shared new artwork by DC legend Jim Lee.
Lex Luthor’s Iconic Battle Suit Finally Goes Live-Action
The striking illustration shows Lex Luthor in his green-and-purple mech suit, facing off against Superman, who casually leans against him with a screwdriver in hand. While Luthor’s armored battle suit has been a staple in comics and animation for decades, this will mark its first live-action appearance.
Not a Direct Sequel, but a Saga Continues
Gunn has teased the project for weeks, noting it’s not a direct sequel to Superman but will continue the storyline introduced in this summer’s box office hit.
“I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the Superman Saga,” Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter last month.
Ties to Past Superman Stories
Although plot details remain secret, the title draws connections to the 2020 animated film Superman: Man of Tomorrow and the 2003 miniseries Superman: Birthright. Meanwhile, Jason Momoa’s Lobo is confirmed for next summer’s Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie, releasing June 26, 2026. That will be followed by James Watkins’ Clayface on September 11, 2026.
Superman’s Box Office Success Sets the Stage
Gunn’s Superman, released earlier this year, brought in $611.6 million worldwide, making it the top-grossing comic book film of 2025. The movie introduced David Corenswet’s Superman, Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, along with Guy Gardner (Nathon Fillion), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced).
What to Expect From Man of Tomorrow
The previous film ended with Lex Luthor in tears as he was taken into custody, hinting at his return. Gunn’s Instagram post suggests Lex will once again play a major role—but Superman’s calm, almost friendly stance teases a possible alliance rather than just another clash.
Anticipation Builds for 2027
With Man of Tomorrow slated for July 2027, James Gunn is clearly shaping a long-term vision for his Superman Saga. For now, fans are left to speculate on how this chapter will unfold—but anticipation is already sky-high.
