Two of the most anticipated premieres of the 50th Toronto International Film Festival, Roofman and The Rental Family, hit the big screens on Saturday evening. Though the two films are very different in their tone and story, strong performances from Channing Tatum and Brendan Fraser have set the tone for the Best Actor race at the Oscars.
Channing Tatum in Roofman
Roofman, premiering at Roy Thomson Hall, is directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) and is based on a true story.
- Plot: Tatum plays Jeffrey Manchester, a divorced father who takes a job robbing McDonald's stores to raise his children. A criminal yet humble, his story begins with a prison sentence and leads to an unexpected romance with a Toys "R" Us employee (played by Kirsten Dunst).
- Performance: Critics have called Tatum's role the best performance of his career, his most compelling work since Foxcatcher (2014).
- Awards buzz: Tatum is now seen as a serious Best Actor contender for the Oscars, while Dunst may also receive a Best Supporting Actress nomination, following her previous nomination for The Power of the Dog (2021).
- Release: Paramount has scheduled Roughman for a wide release on October 10, making it a top priority for awards season.
Brendan Fraser in Rental Family
At the Royal Alexandra Theatre, Hikari ( 37 Seconds , Beef ) premieres his second feature film, Rental Family.- Plot: Inspired by a growing trend in Japan, the story centers on a service where strangers can be “hired” to play family roles. Fraser plays a down-on-hire American actor who finds purpose in this unusual job but struggles with emotional limitations.
- Co-stars: Takehiro Hira, Akira Emoto, and newcomer Shannon Gorman bring depth to Fraser’s emotional journey.
- Performance: Fraser delivers a tender, heartfelt portrayal that cements his resurgence after winning an Academy Award for The Whale (2022). Critics compare the role to something Jimmy Stewart has played.
- Awards buzz: Early screenings suggest The Rental Family is one of the best test films of recent years, and Fraser is again being nominated for Best Actor.
- Release: Searchlight Pictures will release this film on November 21, bringing it into Oscar season.

With both Roughman and The Rental Family receiving critical acclaim, Channing Tatum and Brendan Fraser are now firmly in the race for an Oscars 2023 Best Actor nomination. Their performances not only highlight their career-defining moments, but also add even more intensity to an already packed awards ceremony.
