Waymo is officially bringing its driverless robotaxi service to the Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC), marking the company’s first foothold in the South Bay. Airport authorities have authorized Waymo to operate pickups at both Terminal A and Terminal B.
Testing Begins This Fall
The Mountain View–based company, which spun out of Google in 2017, confirmed that testing will start this fall. Paid passenger service is expected to launch later this year.
San Jose City Manager Jennifer Maguire said the program represents “a new innovative option in how passengers travel to and from the airport.”
Pickup Zones and Service Areas
According to airport officials, Waymo robotaxis will be able to pick up travelers at designated spots outside Terminals A and B. However, rides are limited to destinations within Waymo’s Bay Area service zone. That zone includes San Francisco and much of the Peninsula up to Burlingame, but currently does not extend across the full South Bay.
Regulatory Approval Already Secured
In May, state regulators granted Waymo permission to operate in the South Bay, including most of San Jose. However, the company has not yet confirmed when rides from SJC to other South Bay destinations—such as Cupertino, Santa Clara, or Mountain View—will become available.
Reshaping Travel with AI-Powered Transportation
The rollout at San Jose airport marks another step in Waymo’s push to scale autonomous ride-hailing across Silicon Valley. With more airports and cities exploring AI-powered transportation, the service could reshape how travelers commute between tech hubs and major airports.
