Renowned Hollywood director and actor Rob Reiner (78) and his wife, photographer and producer Michelle Singer Reiner (70), were stabbed to death in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. Police have arrested their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, and he has been charged with two counts of murder.

According to reports, Nick Rhyner suffered from schizophrenia, and a few weeks before the murder, his medication was changed, causing his behavior to become more uncontrolled and dangerous. Nick had long struggled with mental health and drug addiction issues. He lived in the guest house of his parents' home.

The night before the incident, Rob and Michelle took Nick to Conan O'Brien's holiday party, where Nick behaved unusually and argued with his parents. The next day, their young daughter, Romy Rhyner, discovered the bodies in the house and called the police. Nick was arrested near Exposition Park that night.
Nick is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, including multiple murder and the special circumstance of a deadly weapon. This could result in the death penalty or life imprisonment. However, California has a moratorium on the death penalty. Nick's mental competency will be evaluated in court. His plea will be next month.
The surviving children – eldest son Jake (34) and daughter Romi (27) – issued a statement: "Words cannot describe the pain we feel at this terrible loss of our parents. We ask for privacy and ask that people remember our parents' lives."
This is a major blow to Hollywood. Rob Reiner directed films such as "A Few Good Men," "Misery," and "This Is Spinal Tap." The entire industry is in mourning.
