Michigan Fires Head Coach Sherrone Moore After Investigation Finds Evidence of Inappropriate Relationship with Staff Member
Immediate Termination, No Buyout
The University of Michigan has terminated head football coach Sherrone Moore effective immediately. Athletic director Warde Manuel announced the decision Wednesday afternoon, citing the results of an internal investigation that uncovered credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship between Moore and a female member of the football program’s staff.
The firing is “for cause,” meaning Moore will not receive any buyout on the remaining four years of his five-year contract.
Coaching Record and Background
Moore, 39, was 17–8 in two seasons as head coach (9–3 in 2025). He had served as offensive coordinator on the 2023 national championship team and was promoted when Jim Harbaugh left for the Los Angeles Chargers.
Interim Leadership and Bowl Game
Associate head coach Biff Poggi has been named interim head coach for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against Texas on December 31.
Reports of Arrest
Multiple reports late Wednesday indicate Moore was taken into custody by Saline police and transferred to Pittsfield Township police. Details of any charges have not been released.
University Statement
The university has not identified the staff member involved and has declined further comment, saying only that the conduct violated university policy.
Next Steps for the Program
Michigan’s search for a permanent replacement is expected to begin immediately. The timing is complicated by the transfer-portal window reopening in January and the 2026 recruiting class, which includes five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood.
Moore is married to Kelli Moore; the couple has three daughters.
