California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued a solid challenge to the Trump administration ! Today, on MLK Day (January 19, 2026), entry to over 200 California state parks is free – for day-use vehicles (max 9 passengers), absolutely free! This is a direct response to Trump's decision to remove MLK Day and Juneteenth from the list of free entry days for national parks and add his own birthday (June 14, Flag Day).
Newsom 's strong statement: "While Trump works to erase Dr. King's legacy, California will honor it." He quoted Dr. King's words – "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that." and said that California will not allow national parks to become symbols of exclusion and fear, taking a stand for light and access.

This free entry is made possible by private funds from the California State Parks Foundation – no taxpayer money involved! Famous parks like Big Basin Redwoods , Half Moon Bay State Beach , Doheny State Beach , Folsom Lake , Lake Oroville , and many coastal, mountain, and redwood spots are included. Note: Some special spots, like Hearst Castle, off-highway vehicle areas, or partner-run locations, may have fees.

Yeh sab Black History Month ke 100th anniversary ke saath connect hai. Newsom encourage kar rahe hain sabko: Get outside, enjoy nature, reflect on Dr. King's legacy of justice & equality, aur civil rights commitment renew karo. Plus, MLK Day of Service ke volunteer opportunities bhi hain state-wide!

Pro Tip for US Audience (especially California lovers or travelers) : If you're in the US and want to spend a nature + meaningful day, this is the perfect free opportunity! National parks (like Yosemite, Joshua Tree) will have fees today due to Trump policy, but California state parks are wide open and free.
