Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963 at the March on Washington – where he advocated for people to be judged by their character, not their skin color. This led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. But even today, significant gaps remain – poverty is higher among Black families (about 20% vs. 9% for Whites), and the income gap is also wide. The dream has not yet been fulfilled.
Now this opinion says that some policies in Trump's second term are setting back MLK's vision:
- DEI Programs were abolished – An executive order declared diversity, equity, and inclusion "illegal discrimination" and banned them at the federal level, and also put pressure on private companies.
- Voting Rights Weakened – The Justice Department withdrew from important cases related to the Voting Rights Act, which MLK had fought for.
- Cuts to Social Programs – The "Big Beautiful Bill Act" cut $1 trillion+ in anti-poverty and healthcare funding over the decade, which will hit Black communities the most.
- Attempting to change history – remove the dark parts of slavery from Smithsonian museums, show only "success and a bright future" – this seems like whitewashing history.
- Speaking style – Says no to racism, but makes derogatory remarks about certain immigrant groups, prioritizes specific refugees, and claims "I am the best president for Black Americans since Lincoln."
The article ends optimistically with MLK's famous line: "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." And also reminds us of the song – "We shall overcome." It says that after Trump's time, all this will be reversed.
This is a critical view of civil rights supporters. In reality, in 2025-26, Trump removed MLK Day and Juneteenth from fee-free park days, and released some MLK assassination documents with controversy.
