Bryan Kohberger to Plead Guilty in Idaho Student Murders to Avoid Death

Deal Reached to Avoid Death Penalty, Media Reports Say

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - According to many media outlets, former Criminal Justice PhD Student Bryan Kohberger, allegedly avoiding the death penalty, accused of killing four students of Idaho University. Will argue to being guilty in an agreement.

Plea Agreement Shared with Victims’ Families

According to ABC News report, the petition agreement was disclosed in a letter sent to the families of the victims. The hearing of the petition has been determined on Wednesday. The lawsuit of Kohberger’s was initially scheduled for August.


Details of the 2022 Quadruple Homicide

30-year-old Kohburger is accused of killing a knife in November 2022:

  • Kaylee Goncalves

The victims were found in a rental house near the University of Idaho campus in Moscow, Idaho. The dead test report shows that they were sleeping during the attack. Some had defensive wounds, and each had killed many times.


Victim’s Family Reacts with Outrage

After the announcement of the petition, the family of Kaylee Goncalves expressed his anger in the Facebook post:

"We are very angry from the state. They have disappointed us. Please give us some time. It was very unpredictable."


How Authorities Tracked Kohberger

At the time of killing, Kohberger was a student of criminal justice at Washington State University located near Moscow. He was arrested in Pennsylvania a few weeks. Investigators matched his DNA from the substance found on the opening of the knife left on the spot.

Although Kohberger claimed that he was on a long journey alone at the time of murder, but later his rescue team contacted the prosecutors for the potential petition agreement.


Prosecutors: Deal Offers Justice and Closure

Prosecutors wrote in the letter shared with families:

"This resolution is our honest effort to get justice for your family. This agreement ensures that the defendant will be blamed, he will have to spend his remaining life in jail, and you and other families will not have to do the uncertainty of appeals after convicted.."

He said that in his decision to move forward with the petition proposal, "there was a lot of importance".


Judge Could Still Reject Plea Deal

Although it is rare, Idaho Judge can reject petition agreements. If this happens, then Kohbourger will be allowed to withdraw your guilty petition and start the proceedings of the lawsuit.


Trial Relocated Amid Fair Trial Concerns

Due to the comprehensive media coverage and local emotion, this trial was transferred to Boise from rural Northern Idaho, because concern was expressed that the Kohberger will not get fair hearing in Lata County.


Additional Witnesses Ordered to Testify

Separately, a judge of Pennsylvania decided that three witnesses demanded by the defendant - which includes a pre-boxed coach and a childhood acquaintance - will have to travel to Idaho. The role of the third unknown person is still unclear.
