The Lion King Tour Welcomes New Mufasa and Simba This Fall

Disney’s award-winning stage spectacular The Lion King is preparing for another milestone as the North American tour introduces two new leading men. Beginning September 23, 2025, audiences in Portland, Oregon, will see David D’Lancy Wilson take on the role of Mufasa, while Gilbert Domally steps into the shoes of Simba.

The cast change comes as longtime tour leads Darnell Abraham (Mufasa) and Erick D. Patrick (Simba) prepare for their final performances on September 21 at Portland’s Keller Auditorium. Both have spent the past year bringing these iconic characters to life across the country.

From Toronto to the Tour

Wilson joins the North American company fresh from his acclaimed run as Mufasa in Toronto’s sit-down production, which closes on August 30 at the Princess of Wales Theatre. His commanding presence and vocal power have already earned praise in Canada, and fans are eager to see him reprise the role on the road.

Domally, known for his stage charisma and strong vocal range, will be taking on Simba for the first time in the tour. His casting reflects the production’s tradition of blending seasoned performers with fresh talent to keep the long-running show vibrant.

A Year of Cast Changes

This update marks the latest in a series of cast shifts. In September 2024, Darnell Abraham and Erick D. Patrick first joined as Mufasa and Simba, respectively, alongside Thembelihle Cele (Nala) and Juson Williams (Pumbaa). Just a month later, Danny Grumich joined as Pumbaa during the Atlanta stop, while Thom Christopher Warren returned as a standby for multiple roles.

These transitions have ensured the show remains dynamic, offering audiences new interpretations of beloved characters while staying true to Julie Taymor’s iconic vision.

The Musical’s Enduring Appeal

Now in its 27th year, The Lion King remains one of the most successful stage musicals in history, seen by over 112 million people worldwide. The North American tour alone has entertained more than 21 million theatergoers since its debut in 2002. With new performers stepping into lead roles, the production continues to capture the hearts of longtime fans and new audiences alike.

Upcoming Tour Stops

Wilson and Domally officially begin their run in Portland on September 23, 2025, before the tour continues to cities across North America. Tickets are available through official tour outlets and local box offices.
